Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006

This classic Margaret River blend combines the depth and intensity of Semillon with the freshness and crispness of Sauvignon Blanc. The Thompson SSB has developed the style further by selecting fruit from among the best growers in the Margaret River region and fermenting a portion of the Semillon in French oak barriques. The Sauvignon Blanc was picked from the cooler, more southern subregions of Margaret River to avoid tropical fruit over-expression and to enhance the herbaceous sauvignon blanc characters The final blend is 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc. It is bottled using Stelvin caps to retain freshness. The lime fresh aromas of the Semillon complement the stone fruit and gooseberry of the Sauvignon Blanc. There is a refreshing crisp acidity with a mouth filling, complete finish. The result is a crisp, elegant and balanced wine, ideal for drinking now but likely to develop further complexity with cellaring for 3-5 years. Fragrant grass, herb, citrus and apple aromas; light to medium bodied palate follows the bouquet, but not with quite the intensity, falling away slightly on the finish. James Halliday Companion to Australian Wine 2008. Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2005 This is a mighty impressive follow-up to the previous vintage. It’s had a small amount of barrel fermentation which adds significantly to the final mix. Beautiful structure and mouthfeel. A complex wine of real style. 92/100.  Ray Jordan’s Wine Guide 2006-2007. Great value wine over $15. Peter and Jane Thompson have been involved in the wine industry in Margaret river for many years but their Wilyabrup vineyard has only recently been established. I’m impressed by their wines and the value offered by this semillon sauvignon blanc. It is pristine, fresh and fine and has powerful lemon citrus and herbal flavours, and a pleasant, complex mouthfeel.  Quaff 2007 Peter Forrestal

Chardonnay 2005

This is our fifth chardonnay vintage, again under Stelvin. Pre release tastings have ranked this as our best and the most complex to date, and a worthy successor to our first four highly acclaimed vintages. The fruit was picked at Baume 12.5 to achieve high acid levels and at 13.5 to obtain full flavour development. It was partly barrel fermented, with lees stirring and 10 months of maturation in carefully selected French oak barriques. The colour is pale straw with a light green hue. The nose strikingly develops additional complexity in the glass. There is a typical varietal chardonnay nose with citrus, fresh apple with melon and cashews. The wine is fresh on the palate with tight tangy acid and some mineral characters. The controlled, partial malolactic fermentation delivers a smooth richness and elegant mouth feel, without loss of fruit flavour. We expect these characters will develop with careful cellaring over 5 years. The finish is clean with a delightful mouth filling persistence, enhanced by the subtle oak influence. There is a fine balance of fruit, natural acidity and oak which results in a wine which represents a true varietal regional expression of Margaret River chardonnay. Smoky, lightly mineral aromas of grapefruit, lime and tangerineoverlie buttery, creamy oak and hints of tropical fruit. Tangy and forward, its taut, lean and finely scuplpted palate of pineapple, grapefruit, lemon and peach overlies a drying and slightly powdery texture of fine, mineral phenolics. Chardonnay 2004  The Wilyabrup district is the quality heart of the Margaret River region, providing wines of real distinction across a range of grape varieties. Chardonnay is a star with estates like Moss Wood, Cullen, Pierro, and Vasse Felix. Thompson Estate is cast in the mould of the best. A very stylish chardonnay. This shows plenty of winemaking input on the nose, but that artefact doesn’t overwhelm some great fruit. Nutty, earthy, and crème brulee notes add fascinating complexity to central fig-jam-like aromas. The palate tracks the nose with complex flavours, creamy texture, and a very fine, lip-smacking, long finish. 95/100.  Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2007.

Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot 2005

The wine style was developed with Harold Osborne, formerly of Schramsberg and Pelorus. Harold supervises production in Margaret River. The fruit is hand-picked at 19 Brix. The blend is 80% chardonnay, 20% pinot. The base wine was made at Pierro winery, using whole bunch pressing. The primary fermentation is completed in the barrel. The wine lays on French oak for six months before triage and secondary fermentation using selected yeasts. The wine is in lees contact for two years before riddling and disgorgement. On the nose, there are fresh fruit and some nutty bready characters. On the palate,the chardonnay imparts a rich toastymouth filling creaminess and the pinot provides an austere balance. The oak treatment, unusual for a sparkling wine, adds complexity and depth. A rich but fresh style of sparkling wine with a satisfying elegance and mouth feel. Cabernet Merlot 2004

This wine is primarily driven by the strength and subtlety of our Margaret River cabernet sauvignon (75%), softened by merlot (20%) and intensified with a small addition of cabernet franc (5%). Fruit of unusual intensity was produced by meticulous viticulture including bunch thinning, and leaf plucking, and was hand picked at optimal ripeness. Our cabernet merlot winemaker, Janice McDonald, combined traditional and modern viticulture techniques with part maturation in French oak barriques to produce a wine which is ready for drinking now, but will benefit from cellaring for another 2-3 years. The nose is characterised by freshly crushed red berries, with a hint of cassis. There is a mouth filling flavour with well-balanced fruit sweetness and tannins, and a hint of tobacco and cedar. The result is a rich and elegant but approachable wine typical of the great cabernet merlot styles of Margaret River. REVIEWS & AWARDS Cabernet Merlot 2004  This wine achieved Gold medal status at the QANTAS wine Show 2007 and was ranked equal top wine in its class in the recent Winestate recommendations for 2008 releases. Cabernet Merlot 2003 Winestate Magazine Best Wines of 2005 New Releases.Lovely, sweet, fresh, black currant fruit and excellent use of toasty oak make this a stylish wine that will improve further with some time. Easy on the palate 5 stars. One of the better cabernet merlots I have tasted at this price. Loaded with ripe sappy blackcurrant and rich plum pudding characters. The palate is fleshy and soft with a delicious sweet plump fruit character and just a little cedary oak complexity. Nice drinking. 90/100. Ray Jordan Guide to Wine 2005/2006. This wine comes from a newish family vineyard in Margaret River (established 1997). It’s a vibrant red, juicy and bursting with flavour-brambles, blackcurrant, dark plums-smooth texture and neatly integrated finish.  Quaff 2007 Peter Forrestal .

Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Cabernet sauvignon (85%), merlot (7.5%) and cabernet franc (7.5%) are selected from the best cabernet vines on our vineyard, with obsessive canopy management, limited yields, and hand-picking at optimal ripeness and flavour.2004 was a typical Margaret River vintage, with steady ripening and flavour development. Made by Mark Messenger, previously at Cape Mentelle and now at Juniper Estate in Margaret River. Hand plunged, with carefully judged skin contact. Matured for 12 months in the highest quality French oak (one third new, one third one year, one third older) and a small portion of American oak, and then another year of bottle age. Fresh cabernet fruit red berry flavours, complex cassis bouquet and early chocolate and cigar box characters and nice richness developing.Silky tannins from the high quality fruit and meticulous oak treatment, intense and persistent in the mouth. An elegant example, in the forefront of Margaret River cabernets. REVIEWS & AWARDS Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 "Very impressive cabernet. There’s some quality fruit showing gentle blackcurrant character with subtle mint. The palate is a silky seamless mix with fine tannins and beautifully fragrant oak. "Excellent colour, flooded with cassis and blackcurrant supported by quality oak and ripe tannins". 94/100.  James Halliday Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% cabernet franc) Ruby-red. Precise, spicy aromas of redcurrant, cherry and pomegranate molasses complicated by tobacco, mint and cedar. Fleshy but not at all heavy, with musky, meaty cherry and sweeter cassis and vanillin oak flavors developing through the finish. A concentrated, youthful wine with the balance and depth to repay cellaring. In a distinctly Old World style 90/100. Stephen Tanzer 2006. A new Margaret River name with a quality direction like Thompson Estate is always welcome. Its ‘02 chardonnay was great and now the cabernet has arrived. It has herby, blackcurrant fruit with a slightly mulchy touch. The oak is subtle. Andrea Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2005

This wine was built on the successful Cabernet Merlot of 2005, and underwent additional barrel maturation for 12 months. The best of the barrels were chosen for ths wine. It is a more complex expression of margaret River cabernet Merlot and was awarded a Gold at the Perth Royal Wine Show 2007.
